Open Letter to Ninth Graders: (Wesley, Devyn, Catrina, and Nik)

"Open Letter to Ninth Graders" by Patrick Sullivan, is an informative article used to help ninth graders make the transition into high school, and to help them prepare for college. The author wishes to guide the students in the correct for overall college success. He specifies key points in reading, writing, thinking, listening, attitude, and "grit", as imperative regions for growth in the high school years. Though the writing style was very clear and precise, as a group, we decided that the author was slightly biased, and the article could be based more off of opinion than fact. The author stated that you must enjoy certain aspects of learning in order to be successful in college, but that may not be the case. One thing that we did agree with, was when he stated that "Students who are ready for college, read for pleasure, and don't view reading as work.". Reading is basically the first source of knowledge, when you arrive as a freshman in college, and if you aren't meticulous as far  how you choose to view the literature in front of you, you may have trouble initially starting your academic practice. Our statement on this opinion is, you may be more successful if you enjoy reading, but it is definitely not an acquired skill. It is not possible, to force yourself to enjoy any activity, and it may take some dedication if you are wishing to enjoy the time you spend with the wide world of literature. As a team, we viewed the article as slightly biased, and we find it hard to agree with many of the authors points, because of the opinionated approach. The article was very well structured and written, and we are looking forward to hearing more from Patrick Sullivan.
