Open Letter to 9th Graders Response

In the article, "An Open Letter to 9th Graders," the author, Patrick Sullivan, tries to communicate to first year high school students what it takes to become ready for college and what you should do in college to succeed. He wants anyone about to enter college to know that this opportunity is not to be taken lightly and that it is one that comes with great amounts of effort and perseverance. One agreeable point that Sullivan makes is that reading and a liking of reading is invaluable and of tremendous amounts of importance. It not only expands one’s expertise on an area of knowledge, it also heightens the level of one’s vocabulary and ability to fully socialize and understand another’s ideas. However, Sullivan does make at least one disagreeable point in saying that socializing can lead to the squandering of a college education. I think that this only true in extreme respects, because the art of socializing is one that increases the skill level of one’s reading and writing abilities, due to the opening up of new ideas and vocabulary.
