"Open Letter to 9th Graders"

The article, "An Open Letter to 9th Graders" by Patrick Sullivan was written to inform new 9th grade students how to be successful in high school and carry those skills to college.  Sullivan wants students to be prepared for when they get to college, and not blow off their golden opportunity.  They should have the "grit" and self-discipline needed in order to get them through.  Procrastination will not get you anywhere in life because it is a sure sign of laziness. However, contrary to Sullivan's belief, multiple essays aren't required to create a great one.  If you sit down and work hard, the first draft will be just as worthwhile as the third.  Also, you can only do so much to improve your writing skills.  This article will, however, still push young students in the right and successful direction.

  1. Nicely structured paragraph with transitions and author tags to refer back to the article. Thanks!

Note: try to eliminate "you" from writing. Replace with a third person pronoun or a noun instead. For example, "If a student sits down and works hard, the first draft will be just as worthwhile..."
